Fatty Alcohols are made entirely from vegetable feed stocks (coconut and /or palm kernel, supplemented with palm oil stearin). The refined oil is first converted to methyl ester and glycerine, The methyl esters can be fractionated and then hydrogenated to alcohol. The alcohol can be further distilled to achieve the desired chain length distribution. Mid-cut alcohol, the principal alcohol produced, is largely used for surfactant production. Heavy-cut alcohol is predominantly used in personal care and pharmaceutical applications, though there are some large industrial uses. Light-cut alcohol is mainly used in agriculture, petroleum, and wood treatment industries.
